So T-21 days until we set off on our big adventure.  Gayle is in Dubai for a few days (forty-eighth business trip in the last 6 months it feels like), I'm at home getting to grips with this blogging lark and thinking about the fact I've only got 3 weeks to get myself into shape before humping a 65kg backpack around a part of the world about which I knew diddly squat until 3 months ago.

Preparations are going well (I think).  It hasn't really hit me that we're going on holiday for 12 weeks.  Oddly it doesn't feel like planning for a holiday, and I have no idea how I'm going to feel about being away for so long.  When I think about it I feel partly guilty for being away from work for so long - how perverse I tell myself.  It only really starts to sink in when the nurse keeps sinking whacking great needles into my arms (3 to date, and another 4 to look forward to...).
The question I get asked most often is whether we've finalised our itinerary, erm well we know where we're staying for the first week or so, and had two amazing tours planned to Iguazu Falls and Patagonia.  But last week the first wheels fell off when the Iguazu trip was cancelled because the tour company can't find any acommodation as it's Easter weekend.  Oof course we've booked and paid for fllights already so I've been busy scouring the web for some accommodation ideas - I just hope the hostel I've booked is a) there when we arrive, and b) clean.  Watch this space as they say....
My teach yourself Spanish lessons have fizzled out a little bit - I need some inspiration to get back on track - I feel some cramming coming on in the last week and on the flight to BA....

If you're really bothered about leaving work, I'll go and you wont have to worry :-)
1) keiro una cerveza per favora
2) Donde estan los serbicios

You will only need to know the above 2 phrases -'ask for a beer' and 'where are the toilets'
I reckon you can get by using sign language for everything else - or speak really loudly and slowly in English - that works too :-)
I'm VERY jealous and I know you'll both have a fab time. I look forward to your updates.

My travel tip (from my very extensive 1 month interailing tour of Europe, approx 15 years ago now!) is -sort your accomodation as the first thing you do when you arrive at your destination (for all the ones you haven't pre booked). This has 2 benefits - you know you'll have a bed for the night(which isn't always guaranteed because hostels can get full up early in the day) and you'll be able to leave your rucksack there(padlocked of course) and enjoy the sights without being a sweatbox with 65kg on your back.

South American Gold
Hi there R & G, I hope that you will be visiting Peru on your travels. As you know it is the home of South American Gold (the potato). If you are fit enough to climb high into the Andes, I am sure that you will find some of the native species growing. It would be very helpful if you could engage in writing a short thesis on how they are growing and any pests or diseases that you can spot. I'm especially interested in stem canker and jelly end rot and would be eternally grateful if you were able to secrete examples of these into your cavernous rucksacks, and bring them back to GB so that I can study them. See you on saturday and will expect you to have sorted a route to Peru by then.
Lots of love,

Chill up
Guys I dont understand why if you go to a beach in the end of march in south, (south) america you espect it to be summer and people would be in the beach instead of being at school or in their jobs...Punta its great realy in summer and week ends in the rest of the year, if its not raining or with bad weather...dont rain in Ko Samui?
Also mait, hotels if they are full cant give you a room that its not ready or in posetion of other guest...this will happen everywere and your trip may be a disaster!!!
I wish you better luck in you next trip!!!
The Oriental Patagon!!!
