We have to say at the outset that we both love London. When you think about it - what is there to not love? Even though it is not renowned for its great weather, it is still such a fun place to visit. This is our second visit to this city on this trip (our third visit in total – having also visited about two years ago.)  In fact on our last day there we met a lovely couple from Norway who informed us that it was about their fiftieth visit to London and they boasted that they still find new things to do each time!

This was also to be our second last stop for this trip and we obviously wanted to finish our journey on a high note so, with this in mind, we tried to combine some old and new activities.

Firstly, we again went to a live theatre show in West End. This time we saw Les Miserable.  Londoners are spoilt for choice when it comes to theatre. Within a few blocks, there are so many shows to choose from and this means that the prices – compared with those in Australia – are very good value. We also re visited Harrods – the iconic department store which we thoroughly enjoyed for the first time earlier in our trip. The food hall in particular was really fun with so many varieties of food and drink on offer. It was also a great place to pick up some last minute gifts.

Of course, walking to Harrods from our accommodation in Paddington meant a stroll through Hyde Park and a further short walk from Harrods saw us in South Kensington. This is the point. Wherever you are in London, you are never far from the next great place. It all fits together so neatly – like the pieces of a jigsaw. It is also a pedestrian friendly city and when you are tired of walking, the public transport system is very reliable and easy to use.

The Portobello Markets, Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square were also old favourites for us which were well worth another look.

On our list of new things to do, we visited the Natural History Museum (which had a fantastic dinosaur exhibition at the time of our visit), and we did a tour through Kensington Palace. We walked down The Mall and visited London Bridge and explored the area around Waterloo.

It was also interesting to be there at the time of the death of Maggie Thatcher. Obviously this was huge news with massive media coverage examining every aspect of her life. What was interesting was the way in which she was still able to divide the nation – even in death. Her demise certainly brought out strong views from both sides of the political spectrum.

It was kind of bitter/sweet when it finally came time to board our plane at Heathrow Airport. We were, of course happy to be going home to our boys, our friends and family and our home. It was time – we knew that – after being on the road for twenty weeks –to return to our 'other life'. At the same time there was a tinge of sadness that our trip had come to its end.

But.......what a trip it was, AND we still have two days in Singapore to go!!

Kerrie Lane on

Is it really 20 week? It seems like you have been travelling forever. We leave in 1 week. At the moment we are trying to decide what to do with the last 5 days of our trip - London is high on the suggestion list. We have visited London on 5 different trips now but have to agree with you that is a very visitable city. Will it be London or will we spend the last 5 days revisiting the Somme???? Oh the decisions some of us have to make. Looking forward to catching up with you in July.
