Where I stayed

Due to some logistics problems in trying to get to Malta we decided to make a move back north to the town of Salerno. This town is at the start of the Amalfi Coast, an area that we visited in 2011.
The trip off the island of Sicily was interesting as we were able to watch the train being transported on to the ferry for its crossing of the strait back to the mainland.

The trip from the tip of Italy then follows the west coast with the train running along the edge of the sea for most of the journey. Stunning scenery was at most corners although, as has been the case in southern Italy, most of the towns look as if they have shut up shop for the winter. Many looked like ghost towns as we rumbled past.

We arrived to threatening grey clouds which soon burst sending a solid down pour that stopped us from venturing out to explore the city. We had been lucky up to this point in time having always had magnificent weather, so one rainy day was not going to spoil this part of the world. We hoped!

Well, we woke up the next morning to a bit of sun and a beautiful view fom the balcony of the Grand Hotel Salerno. A quick breafast and we were off to explore the city. You guessed it - ten minutes into wandering through the streets, and down it poured, Luck was not going to be on our side at this stop.

Still we pushed on window shopping until we found a restaurant overlooking the beach where we stopped for a beer because they didn't have any gluten free pasta. The fact there was thunder and a bit of lightening was also a good excuse. The waitresses were really surprised when they found out we were Aussie's - gee we hate being asked whether we are English !

The rain eased slightly so we made a dash to the next restaurant which luckily hade some risotto for Del. The morning was saved.

It's a shame it was so wet because, although the conditions were terrible, you could see that there is a lot to like about Salerno. Well, we will just have to come back another day.

Another hotel we have stayed in. The weather was overcast and wet on our last visit as well. We love the dining in Salerno - small restaurants that spill out on to the side walk and scooters buzzing through between the tables - only in Italy!
