Frankfurt is an interesting mixture of the old and the new. Having been subjected to massive bombings during world war two, much of it has been rebuilt. Whilst it is friendly, clean and easy to get around, it's history has resulted in it lacking a little bit of character, compared with many other European cities
As per our way of travelling the first thing we did was to walk the city streets taking in the local sights from our hotel in the south of the city.. A two kilometre walk and we were in the city centre straight into our first Christmas Markets.
Now the Germans might not be known for their sense of humour but they do know how to do a market ! Rows of stalls selling everything from xmas decorations to various nic nacs. Mention must be made of the food & drinking outlets where the crowds mill around the stalls with steam coming from the various types of hot gluigwiess alcoholic drinks. The concoction can vary to your desired taste - be it wine or apple cider with various spices.
The atmosphere is fun & friendly with everybody full of christmas cheer. This has been a great way to start the trip.
A short train ride took us to the town of Mainz. This is far more 'traditional' European with cobblestoned, winding streets in the old part of town and, of course, the Rhine river. A lovely place to walk around. This town also boasts a magnificant cathedral which is said to have had its beginnings one thousand years ago. Again, such beauty and history around almost every corner.
Tomorrow we are heading to Dusseldorf, where we will stay only one night on our way to Hamburg. The first stop of our trip is over already, but the adventure continues.
