Humidity, thunderstorms and rain. Nine days out from the start of our trip and the Gold Coast is turning on some nasty weather but what better time to be indoors and starting the packing process.

Checking we have all the documents, reviewing the the first month of the trip through Germany, Poland, Austria and finally into Italy. When in Rome we will meet up with our son Leigh and his girlfriend Layla on New Years day.

Just as important is catching our youngest son Brett to discuss all the details regarding maintaining the house while we are away. That list is growing bigger - check the mail, what days to take out the rubbish, how often he has to cut the lawn, (wonder if that will happen regularly), who to call if the gas runs out or he needs a plumber or electrician. I better stop or this list will continue to grow out of hand and as he says - "Don't stress I'll handle it". Hmmmmm I wonder.

Del has started to pack her winter clothes and has been very good so far in minimizing what she will take. Less is best when travelling for an extended trip as weight and too many bags become a nightmare when moving around. I hope I can do the same,(out goes the golf clubs for this trip). I'll probably start packing on Tuesday......now I know where Brett gets  his laid back approach  from.

I will be picking up the eurail pass this week and it should meet our needs for the first two months of travelling. After Rome it looks like we will travel south in Itally to Sicaly and then on to Malta. The toss up after that is do we head to Istanbul in Turkey or head towards Spain? We will leave those decisions for a later date and  any feedback we get from fellow travellers will guide us.

While the trip will be an adventure I will be seriously looking from a business point of view at how the European & UK countries handle their logistics, in particular refrigerated transport, warehousing and  distribution.

My main interest will be in the home delivery processes as I believe the Cool Couriers Refrigerated Freight Services Licence's I have structured over the past four years needs to be at the cutting edge of an industry that is only really begining to take off in Australia.

Well 9 days into the countdown, the excitment builds.

Forget the house Del, it will still be standing when you get home and the neighbours will tell you all the sordid stories when you return!!

Delma and Steve, I was so excited to open up your blog and find your first entries. They sound like the start to a great book! The list we leave behind is fondly known as "The Death List" - we do travel by motor bike after all! I'm sure Brett will handle all. If he has any problem, tell him I know of a very helpful Police Officer. We fly into London on May 5th and will be in UK/Ireland until about May 20th, then across the Channel for the rest of our trip. Hope we can catch up. Happy travels.
