Woe is...getting into Ecuador!
Entry 10 of 19 | show all | print this entry |
Wow - first the road was unpassable and now this!
After the debacle of the border crossing in La Balsa we made our way to the coast to chill out for a while and research Ecuador further. We spent the Easter weekend in the nice city of Chiclayo before heading a bit further north to the sleepy beach town of Mancora. Fully refreshed, and having gathered much useful information on the Galapagos and practically booking ourselves into a language school in Quito, we headed for the main Peru-Ecuador border. We were a little apprehensive beforehand having heard from various sources that this was the most dangerous crossing in the whole of South America - notorious for bags being swiped! Everything was going swimmingly anyway - stamped out of Peru in Tumbes, not a bother. I got stamped into Ecuador, not a bother. However, disaster struck!! Gretta´s passport number was recognised on the computer as having been used to enter Ecuador a few months previously by a different girl!! We were flabbergasted at this and thought it would be resolved pretty quickly.
No such luck! After much attempted discussion, involving a couple of English guys acting as interpretors, we gathered that there was nothing to be done. The driver of our bus was in looking for us and we had to go out and pull our bags off the bus. So back to Peru with us - AGAIN! Gretta has since been in touch with the Irish consulate and they are trying to sort it out - we can only imagine that it was an administrative error. Otherwise, someone saw her passport number somehow and created a fake passport for herself? Anyway, dodgy as hell!
We figured it was now time to check Peru out properly and forget about Ecuador - regrettably. We made our way back to Chiclayo before continuing south to the city of Trujillo. This is a very historic city and we visited the nearby pre-Inca ruins of Chan Chan and the Pyramid of the Moon. Both were extremely impressive with the art work that has been preserved being most eye-catching!
We are now about to head for Huaraz, high-up in the mountains, and hopefully do a 3/4 day trek with our buddy Cho.
So adios for now!
