Alright, because we are simply that twisted, and because it fit best into our schedule, we chose February 14th to go to Auschwitz, or Oswiecim, the Polish name, and Birkenau (Brzezinka)...
Not the cheeriest way to spend the day, but very inofrmative and quite the learning experience...
Over a million people were murdered there and it feels rather spooky...
We managed to go to Birkenau first by accident, and there were virtually no tourists there...we timed it well, because as we were leaving at least 10 tourist buses arrived!  Apparently we aren't the only depressing people who come on holidays...
Birkenau is where the majority of the killings actually took place and it is massive...you can walk through the old barracks and it feels very sombre and cold...
Auschwitz has a museum filled with possession, including a building housing thousands and thousands of shoes, one display of tons and tons of human hair, which the Nazis sold to the textile market and made a handsome profit...
Interestingly, the buildings where the Nazis stored their loot was dubbed 'Canada'
It is very disturbing that something like this was able to take place and while it is certainly not a happy place, it is a vital thing to see when one travels to Poland...it is in fact the largest concentration camp that the Nazis set up...
As George Santayana said, "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it"
