Bratislava, Slovakia
We visited Slovakia today. It's only 90 minutes from Vienna (Westbahnhof) on the train. It's not polished and refined like Vienna but has a raw developing feel. The people are friendly and helpful.
Prices in Bratislava are a fraction of those in western Europe. A meal (nice meal too) can be purchased for a couple of dollars. All five of us ate lunch in a restaurant for about $15 including beer and wine.
It was very warm today and the temperature reached over 30 degrees.
The 'Old City' is very beautiful with lots of red roofed homes and cobbled streets and an imposing castle on the peak of the hill. It's an easy walk from the centre of town to get there.
It was built in the 12th Century and was home to St. Elizabeth of Hungary from 1207-1231.
The plaque tells that she died at age 24. However, when her husband died she took a vow of poverty and made it her life's work to care for the poor and the sick.
Her statue shows her feeding bread to a sick man.

A short walk from the Central Railway Station leads to the Presidential Palace.
Presidential Palace
At midday the guards choreograph a march from outside the gate to inside the gate. A lot of pomp and ceremony to move into the shade!
