Countryside from train
The train station was easy to negotiate and we found the correct platform right away, it is Gleis 1. As I said before, this is a Inter City train and it will only stop at 6 or 7 stations between here and Prague. Major stations such as Dresden. It travels through the former east Germany and will move down the track pretty quickly. I am sure glad I chose 1st class, as there is plenty of space for the luggage and the seats were pretty comfortable.
Prague is the last city we will visit. There is a major Christmas market in Prague as well as a number of beers that I haven’t had before, plus the original Budweiser. Which is nothing like the American version. We will fly from Prague back to the US. The train trip is essentially an all day affair, and it gives us a bit of down time as we have been moving pretty quickly doing all types of different tourist things.
The day is starting in Berlin at a temperature of 41 degrees F and the skies are more clear than overcast. I am sure that will be the weather, all the way down to Prague. So it is a good day to ride a train. Kathy's first train ride in Europe and her first time since she was a little girl.
Let me mention fashion. As previous the Germans are really into blue jeans and the jeans are a bit faded, now they wear them with the cuff turned up about 4 inches and we have really seen a lot of Germans both young and old wearing red - red tennis shoes. The other major outer wear are military style jackets, pants and overcoats. Frequently they wear old style US Army field jackets, the olive drab color, but there are many wearing the US camouflage pattern coats. Then of course there are parts of the Bundeswehr’s uniforms. German girls wear their hair long and straight and as always very little make-up. There are all sorts of quasi military patches on the sleeves of both the coats and the shirts. Not as many people have tattoos and those that do, seem to be the odd person out. On women’s feet - boots are the thing and most are higher than mid calf. There are lots of earth colors in scarves and accessories. Berlin is filled with young professional girls, just as we experienced in Washington DC. And as always Germans move on the street as if they have a purpose. Economically, they all seem to being doing very well. Even more so than twenty years ago.
