On the journey to Cambodia we were treated to a couple of films by Charlie Chaplin which felt very bizarre particularly as the second one was "the great dictator".
Today we saw how dictators, in this case Pol Pot, can have an incredibly evil and destructive impact on fellow human beings. The Killing Fields and S21 Prison are infamous and I won't go into any detail here except to say that I was privileged to shake the hand of a survivor of S21.
We then had lunch at the French Correspondence Club - a westerners journalist hangout. We followed this with a visit to the Grand Palace and saw the luxury in which the monarchy live! So quite a day of contrasts to say the least!
King Norodom's story is quiet fascinating and he only died last year. Suffice to say he ruled over the greatest period of Cambodian history before the Vietnam war and left the country in a better place after Pol Pot had almost destroyed it!
Why there are such evil people in the world I guess only god knows!

Nothing like a reminder about the fragility of life to determine what is important;
greed and power will never take the place of love and peace....God rest their souls those poor children
