So we have left Thailand for Lao. The border crossing was an adventure of boats, Tuk Tuk, form filling and queue jostling. The Chinese seemed to be able to bribe their way to the front of each queue as the westerners huddled around muttering under their breath about how they would improve the system.
Anyhow Lao is a pretty poor country and one of only five communist states in the world (a prize for the first person to name the other four) It has only just recently been opened up for tourism and so we are a bit of a novelty. It was bombed heavily in the Vietnam war as it was an important supply route. Before that it was occupied by France and before that the Siamese.
Locally the PDR is referred to as "please don't rush" which is exactly what we are doing as we cruise on a slow boat down the Mekong for the next two days.
