We were really shocked at how pretty St Petersburgh was. The architecture was incredible and made better by the canals that run alongside many of the streets.
We had two days wandering the city before spending a full day pretending to be cultured as we wandered the rooms and exhibits of the Hermitage museum, but didnt even pretend to scratch the surface of the 3,000,000 pieces on display.
Our host Anna was really great, cooking us breakfast and dinner and then spending a full day showing and explaining the different neighbourhoods of the city
Our travel partner Jen was couchsurfing with a different host. He was in a band and the three of us went to watch one of his gigs. Although the 9 band members tried really hard, it actually turned out to be the worst music I have ever heard, at one stage I suspected the gig may have been one elaborate practical joke. None the less it was a good night and a nice way to say goodbye to Jen who catching a bus to Berlin the next morning and ended a spell of 30 days where the 3 of us travelled together.
The bus journey to Tallin, Estonia was 7 hours, but with plenty of leg room, comfortable seats, wifi and a selection of movies to watch on a private screen, it was rather pleasant and a different world compared to some of the buses we took in East Africa.
