Where I stayed

Just a night in Guilin where we saw some of the crazy stuff the Chinese eat paraded outside the local restaurants, toads, turtles, rodents and some very strange fish were all on display.

We set out for a good meal before the journey to Xi'an, but with a no English spoken it is just a case of pointing at something on the menu. Unfortunately all that came out this time was a plate of chillies and a bowl of battered bones in a sweet and sour sauce. Then off to the bus station  to catch the 2.30 bus.

After a 3 hour delay we finally set off and were very glad to discover that they did not pack the aisle which made the journey much easier.

The journey did take on some historical importance for me after about 5 hours, when we stopped at a restaurant for dinner, and I discovered the worst toilet I have ever seen in my life...

It was a room lined lined with two troughs, one for pooing and one for weeing. The stench was incredible and after noticing two Chinese men staring at me whilst squatting over the pooing trough, I decided to take my business elsewhere. After stumbling out and managing not to faint, I was then greeted by a little boy having a poo at the entrance to the restaurant. Once we were on the road again I explained what I had seen to Charlie, and she explained that she had just witnessed a very small boy poo in to some news paper and then watched the mother roll it up and send it down the aisle.

After 14 hours we arrived somewhere and needed to change buses. We were equipped with  instructions in Chinese characters and we wandered around the station showing our instructions to different people, being pointed in different directions. We finally made it on to a bus that we were 90% confident was going to Xi'an and were then horrified to learn that the bus would not take 2 hours but would take 9.

We did make it to Xi'an at 8pm, which capped off nearly a 30 hour journey, and we vowed never to take another bus in China.
