Sunny & Chris were right, Xingping was a much nicer place to explore the Li River from. We stayed for three nights, spending most of our time out on the bikes admiring maybe some of the best scenery we have seen on our trip so far.

Xingping and the surrounding area were superb, although what did take the shine off the experience a little bit was the fact that we were there during Chinese school summer holidays.

This ensures that Xingping is swamped by huge marauding Chinese tour groups every afternoon, and the tiny cycling routes have enormous speeding tour buses armed with mind-bendingly loud horns.

It is amazing staring at some of the elderly farmers as they are pushed off the road by the buses and then surrounded by tourists looking for a traditional photo and thinking about the change they must have seen in their life time.

Another implication of the school holidays is that a train is out of the question. So if we wanted to stick to our plan of getting back to London overland we would have to take the bus.

So we took a 2 hour bus to Guilin to organize our bus to Xi'an.
