Where I stayed

After the disappointment of Berastagi we arrived on the Island of Samosir and found a great guesthouse offering an en-suite bungalow on the shores of Lake Toba, for only 5 pounds a night - complete bargain.

The lake is huge and is the biggest volcanic lake in the world, and I do spend quite a bit of time trying to imagine the explosion that could have caused such a crater. When the super volcano that we are currently sitting above erupted 7,000 years ago, it nearly wiped out the human race and was the largest explosion on earth for the last 25 million years.

Whilst on the island we occupied ourselves reading on our balcony over looking the lake, or spending time with an American couple called Gordon & Kim who we met in Bukkit Lawang. The four of us spent a very enjoyable day exploring the island on scooters and I spent a couple of very late nights trying to keep up with Euro 2012.

We planned only a couple of nights on Lake Toba, but it was so pleasant we ended up staying for four.

We then took the boat back to the main land and took a 5 hour bus (with several breakdowns) back to Medan. Then straight to the airport and bought a flight later in evening to Jakarta. It was about 12 hours all in and left us both pretty shattered as we arrived in around midnight, so the last thing we wanted to do was wander from hotel to hotel trying to find somewhere with an available room...

We arrived in to Bali last night. We are in Kuta at the moment, that boat ride in Borneo sounded tough!
