We arrived in to Medan and organized our visa before checking in to a hotel for the night.

Our first impressions of Sumatra were that it is clearly not as developed as Malaysia or Thailand, we encountered much more staring, and, everybody smokes. There was cigarette advertising everywhere, and it seems to be very rude not to be smoking when engaging in conversation with somebody.

Smoking seems to be such a big part of their culture that if it is noticed that we are not smoking when walking somewhere, strangers will approach us and offer us a cigarette.

Medan is not a particularly nice place and offers little in the form of attractions. So just one night before taking a 4 hour bus North to Bukit Lawang.

Enjoyed reading your Malaysia and Indonesia blog. I went there in 1980. Must be very different now but the Indonesians are the nicest people i have ever met. They never stop smiling. You have also made us all want to go to Malaysia for the snorkeling and the beaches. Loved the photo with all the school kids piled high on the roof of the tuk-tuk.

Yes I am sure it is probably unrecognizable now, although the people are still very friendly. Malaysia really did have great beaches and snorkelling would make a great holiday
