Bagan is famous for the 2,200 ancient temples that surround the area. It was far too hot to go out during the day, although we did make the most of our two nights there exploring as many of the temples as we could during the cooler hours of the day.

For the last couple of weeks Charlie had been unsuccessfully searching for the book "Burmese Days" by George Orwell. So it was very fitting that a local boy with an Ulster badge sewn on to his bag approached her and offered her the book! He and I then engaged in a brief, but passionate discussion about our mutual love for the Queen and the orange order, before we said farewell and bought the book.

From Bagan we boarded a bus bound for Mandalay. It should have taken 8 hours, but after 3 the bus broke down. We ended up spending 10 hours at a little village on the road. The people there were very poor and some of the younger kids had never seen a camera before. So you can imagine their reaction when I took out the portable DVD player and put X-men on. They loved it, and it was a great day spent playing with the kids, but we were very glad when they fixed the bus and we reached Mandalay.
