Amritsar proved to be our favourite stop in India, we spent two nights here visiting the Golden Temple and the India Pakistan border. The temples imaginative name ensures no further description is required.

Sikhs from all over the country make the pilgrimage here to see the temple and bath in the holly water surrounding the temple. As impressive as the temple was the free canteen which feeds 80,000 pilgrims a day! Charlie & I took our lunch with the other 500 guests whilst I amused the dinners with my inability to cross my legs.

After enjoying our lunch and a lengthy spell of admiring the cooking and cleaning process we took a taxi to the India - Pakistan border to watch the border closing ceremony. The ceremony takes place every sunset and involves both countries attempting to out "do" each other. Over the years both countries ceremony has become more and more elaborate in order to stay ahead. Who can fly the highest flag, who can attract the louder crowd and who possess the guard who can shout the longest are only some of the features of the ceremony on which the countries compete. By far the most amusing feature is watching both countries trying to deploy their most elaborate march. The result is something similar to Monty Python's Ministry of Silly Walk's sketch.

From Amritsar we took an over night bus to Delhi, it should have taken 10 hours but a break down pushed it to 15. The bus was followed by a 6 hour wait in Delhi before catching a 12 hour train to Varanassi.
