We left Lalibela at 5am with our driver, his mate and a really lovely Ethiopian family. The trip was just over 14hours, and the Dad who set next to us could talk the leg off a chair. By the time we got in to Addis at around 7pm the journey and the Dad had sucked all energy from us and we were both completely shattered.

The next afternoon we booked our flight to Zanzibar with Kenya airways to soak up some hard earned beach time, before making the trip to Mercato market to buy some sort of flea killing chemicals

The Zanzibar flight was due to leave at 4am the following morning(They love early starts here) and we set off to the airport at 2am still not recovered from the Lalibela journey, and with Charlie battling a second helping of food poisoning.

Charlie was very sick by the time we got to the airport, and I was trying to get her through it by promising her some of the Zanzibar beaches that were awaiting us.

So you can imagine how difficult it was for me to tell her that we missed our flight!

As Dad will testify, when I miss a flight it is never my fault and this was no exception.

We arrived at the airport in good time and queued for the Zanzibar flight. After 30mins queuing and no movement, a man came and moved the entire queue out of the way. At 3am I tried to find somebody from Kenya airways to ask what was happening, who then told me the flight was closed!

The people in front of us were in the wrong queue and when the entire queue was moved we moved with them only to be waiting in the wrong area while the flight closed further down the terminal. Very frustrating. I explained we were in the correct queue at the correct time and luckily they have sympathized with us, and we will be flying either tonight or tomorrow night depending on availability.

Have just read my entries back to myself, and it does seem like I am trying to write some sort of travel tragedy. We are having fun and will hope that my next couple of entries will contain a couple of happier stoires.

Oh you poor wee darlings. DO hope you have got to Zanzibar.. Please do get a bus to the most northerly beach where BEAUTIFUL shells are washed up on the beach every tide. Remember to eat garlic. Our hotel was so awful it was closed down! We went to visit the island in the bay and saw the giant tortoises. Aman in a pea green tshirt tried to take Jack's wrist watch off his arm. I hit him with my basket! (in one of the entries). Moral: do not wear distinctive clothing for robberies - i was able to identify him when he was grabbed and brought before me - but we let him off - he was so disgraced. The slave market was a sad place to visit. Adam home for leave before off again to foreign parts. Leanne and David have a baby girl called Eve. Your pa and Mike away supporting Leicester City at Rugby AND football. Hugs GS

Hi Paddy & Charlie,

Got shot of those fleas yet? Yes it is a bit of a travel tragedy!! but it still seems you are having a good time. GS told you that David Marty & Leeanne had a wee girl Eve. There are 2 Shiells kids engaged and getting married next year - The eldest Andrew and Rebecca now as well.

Mike & I had aball at Leicester Ulster - we were unlucky not to get a bonus point, Mike Dee Cobain and 4 of the rugby suad went out on the town (Ferris, Cave, Henry & Best) Back at 4am !!! ( I was tucked up in bed doing MotD at 10.30) - and then Leicester City beat Crystal Palace 3 nil on the Sunday. Mike nearly burst a blood vessel when each goal was scored.
Work is still slow and had to let some go. Its awful. You're well away from the turmoil in Euroland!!
Blog is great and lovely pictures - Loved the "Entrance - No Ladies"
Hope things pick up in Zanzibar. Love you both xx
