Up early in the morning to use the internet. Although I was told it would be up and running by 8:30, this did not happen and there was no internet at all during our two nights at the Hole in the Wall Hotel. The hotel complex is fenced in and there is a guard at the gate. For the first time on the trip we feel completely separate from the community around us. Last night I could not imagine why anyone could come here for a vacation but now I have changed my mind. The beach is fabulous. The waves are not too strong but frisky enough to have a great time playing in them. The sea is clear, clean and not too cold. There is almost no one else on the beach, although a cow did wander by. Why I cannot say.
We went to the beach in the morning before our walk to the Hole in the Wall, a scenic rock formation. As we walked along Michelle told us about the herd boys. Every morning they pass by different houses picking up the cattle to take to graze. Cows are not sent out to graze but are kept at home. At the time I was reading Shepherd Boy of the Maloti, which I bought in Lesotho. After lunch, we returned to the beach. Lotta went for the whole afternoon while I had a siesta before joining her for more play in the water. Now we have gone swimming in the Indian Ocean.
In the evening we had a braii, which is quite a tradition in South Africa. The bad news is that Jojo's wife in hospital in Zimbabwe with meningitis. Although she is seriously ill, Jojo believes that he must stay with the tour. I expect that he believes he might lose his job if he left now. His wife is in a private hospital as the public ones in Zimbabwe have no medicines. Conditions in Zimbabwe are dire at the moment so Jojo needs this job not only to support his family but now to pay the hospital bills.
