After breakfast, meeting a lovely fluffy cat with a very short tail, and watching an eagle soaring higher and higher on thermals, we set off NW on highway 395.
Lots of Joshua trees between Panamint and Darwin - no Irish musicians though. Also went past Owen's Lake which on map was big and blue but which in real life was a mere puddle.
Lovely views of Sierra Nevada on the left - some peaks over 11,000 ft. We turned off at Mammoth Lakes and had lunch at Tamarack Lodge overlooking Twin Lakes - very nice and picturesque.
Back on 395 til we hit a left into Yosemite National Park via the Tioga Pass. Stopped at Tuolumne Meadows - alpine meadows some 10,000 ft above sea level. Nice and cool with ground squirrels watching us stood up erect like meerkats.
Then into the Park to take the exit at El Portal via a demanding 25 mph limit twisty roads. Our hotel at Mariposa was a further 30 miles away and we had to take a detour due to a past landslide wiping out the westbound carriageway.
Was dreading the hotel after reading reviews after I booked it (incl. Fleas in bed, blood on carpet, 2nd bed being a mattress on the floor etc) but the place exceded my expectations!
No restaurant so we ate up the road at Miner's Arms.
