Flag of Malta  , Island of Malta,
Tuesday, June 2, 2009

On a small island sitting in the crossroads of the Mediterranean, just south of Sicily, lives a content, quirky and jovial man. His name is Joseph Mills. At first glance he appears to be Italian but he will quickly correct and advise you, he is Maltese. Now close to his mid 70s', Joe doesn't need to leave his tiny island village to see the world, as the world comes to him. And Joe has the stories to prove it, which he will gladly share with you in great detail over a beer.

Strategically located, Malta has held the world's attention since the days of the crusading knights (the Knights of Malta).

As a child, Joe was influenced by and holds great affection for the U.S. Navy. During World War II, American sailors tossed coins to him and the other children, which they scooped-up and cherished. Joe also has opinions on all subjects, which he will also politely share with you over a beer, such as he loves Americans, the British and Australians in exactly this order. When he not sipping his local island wine or beer and telling stories, Joe enjoys strolling through the botanical gardens and has a great fascination for watches (allegedly, he has collected over 500).

One day as he strolled through the botanical gardens, Joe came across a young American coupled taking photographs. The young man, Michael, asked Joe if he wouldn't mind taking a picture of him and his wife, Lorlinda. When Joe found out this young couple was American he not only took their photo for them but he insisted on buying Michael a beer and Lorlinda a glass of wine. Being in no hurry, the three of them visited Joe's favorite bar (where the beers were only $1 Euro). Everyone in the tiny bar had a wonderful time drinking the local beer, "Cisk" and the island wine. When it was time for Michael and Lorlinda to leave, Joe was very sad, as he still wanted to show them his home and pet birds. So, Mike and Lorlinda promised they would return some day, and Michael gave Joe his watch to add to his collection. Joe was so happy that he hugged and kissed both of them, and would not let them go until they promised to return and stay with him at his home and meet all of his family. THE END.
