Where I stayed
We got ready and parked the camper and rushed down to the beach with our snorkelling gear!! Once at the beach, we both made our way out to deeper waters!! We must have been about 50metres out (Jamie, a lot further as he was a lot faster!) the water was absolutely FREEZING!
Suddenly... I couldn't breathe. I was struggling to swim. My breathing was getting quicker and my heart was racing. I couldn't see anything or anyone around me except water-lots of it!! I suddenly panicked and pulled my snorkel mask off me and shouted for help!! I thought that I was going to drown!! I just kept drinking the water and struggled to keep my head out of the water. My breathing worsened and I struggled to take in any air!! Suddenly Jamie appeared out of no where!! He pulled my head up out of the water and began to slowly swim to the "jetty" where lots of fishermen had cast their lines out to sea. One. Very observant fisherman saw Jamie struggling and threw him a rope. Jamie held onto it and the fisherman pulled us in. Poor Jamie was all caught up in a fishing line too! I had had a bad asthma attack. Once I took my inhalers, I began to feel better. I wouldn't mind but I'm quite a strong swimmer!!!
What a hero!!!
I am going to give you guys an extract from my diary:
Sun 15 Jan - the day Clare drowned
Rather than another day on the beach I thought it would be cool to go snorkelling. So I went to a small diving shop and came out with 2 snorkelling kits for $30. We went to the beach the otherside of the hill, parked up and strolled down, like 2 idiots abroad wearing all our gear already ! The place was really busy as it was a gorgeous day and a Sunday. Clare didn't want to go to the jetty and jump in so we went to the beach and walked in !! Wasn't easy in flippers !! The water was pretty cold too! It must've been 100m we had to swim to get to the reef and I just got cracking, next thing I look back and Clare is a mile behind so I went back and swam a lot slower. We got about half way when I turned again and saw Clare frantically looking around. I knew something wasn't right ! Next thing I know Clare starts to just drop below the waves and rips her mask off; she then shout HELP 3/4 times loudly.
I just got there and told her its OK; she grabbed hold of my shoulders and I began to put my life saving skills to the test for the first time !! Unfortunately I decided to swim to the jetti and against the current, every second getting more tired and Clare breathing worsening !! Then to top it off I was caught up in one of the fishing lines off the jetti !! Secretly I was pooing my pants a little; but I couldnt let Clare see that. Luckily one of the fish men threw out a rope; EVENTUALLY we made it to the jetti !
After we both got out of the water and began to dry off Clare said to me that she was breathing difficult in the cold water, then she had and asthma attack which brought on a panic attack ! Clare said that she actually thought she was a goner !
And I dismissed that, but looking back if she was on her own or I didn't get the feeling something was wrong she may well have been ! Scary!
As much as I love Clare, she is a walking disaster hahaa
