Where I stayed
At one coastal spot, we stopped and saw something moving in the bushes. Was it a rat? Well, close I guess - it was our first squirrel. T2 was very taken with it, particularly when it was joined by all its mates. They obviously knew that tourists in cars equalled food. We found a cracker and T2 spent a happy ten minutes surrounded by the furry creatures.
At San Simeon, we gazed at Hearst Castle, high in the distance, but decided not to take a tour as it was probably not too interesting for the treasures
We continued on through more fog and arrived at our campground in Big Sur in time for dinner (a short drive of 117 miles took us about 6 hours!). The cabin was basic, with bunks for the treasures and a double bed, a picnic table and fire pit outside. The shop up the road had franks and buns, so we cooked dinner on the open fire. Roasted marshmallows on sticks (did you know you can buy a marshmallow stick for $2.50 US? - why would you bother?!) for dessert weren't a great hit, but the treasures spent much happy time just poking at the fire with their sticks.
In the morning, we met another Aussie family who had stayed the night and listened to their tips, as they had already spent two weeks travelling in the opposite direction to us and had visited many of the places we are heading to - they even stayed at our hotel in Vegas - Excalibur.
