Day 5: Phillip Island to Robe SA.
Up early this morning, packed, fed and checked-out by 8.30 am. Said our goodbyes (although I am sure Maria kissed all the boys twice?) We turned left at the roundabout while the rest of the gang turned right. We're headed up to Melbourne, over the Westgate Bridge and then onto the Western Highway towards Ballarat. The Citylink Toll roads are free for motorcycles (did ya hear that NSW Labor? (and Liberal)) so we took advantage of the three and four-lane Toll Roads
After a slowish run through the city and their new fireproof tunnel (sorry), we made good time to Ballarat, where we refueled and had coffee. Pretty cold around here. But the good news was that the further west we headed, the warmer it got.
Stopped at small village called Casterton for arvo’s, and then chanced across something special. I now know where my Dad has been squirreling away all that money he made doing double and triple shifts. He’s been funding a small kingdom in readiness for his retirement. Mum will be chuffed!
The road from Casterton to Robe was magnificent, if not a little breezy. Well, a lot breezy actually. It’s quite a challenge getting the lean right around the sweepers only to have the wind pick up or drop off dramatically while you’re half way round. Keeps you alert I’ll tell you.
Arrived in Robe half an hour before we arrived in Robe. As we crossed the VIC/SA border the GPS and the iPhone automatically retarded (no State pun intended).
Dinner at the local pub. Very nice too. Tomorrow will see us scoot up the west coast of this side of the peninsula to Port Augusta. Wish us luck!
