We took a couple of trips to Hastings during our stay at Battle, just 10 miles inland from this charming coastal town. Hastings is in fact the oldest fishing village in the whole of England. The tracked vehicles which haul the fishing boats into & out of the water (very flat pebbled beaches, leave boats high & dry as the tides ebb & flow) are clearly visible from front esplanade, where one can also see some strange signage on show (see attached photos)!
The delightful, narrow cobblestoned back streets featured a myriad of small shoppes, with so much to browse thru!
By taking one of the two funicular rail car systems (West Hill & East Hill) to the top, a very short cog rail ride, you can now see out across rolling green expanses (which sit high above the village), in particular Old Hastings town, and which you would never even know existed from the streets below! Up top, you can visit castle ruins, take in spectacular views of the English Channel, enjoy the 'Smugglers Adventure Caves" excursion thru the hills above the town, where one learns of the importance of smuggling contraband across the channel from neighbouring Europe back in the good old days...all very intriguing & quite well done....very cool temperature in those tunnels too, even in summer while we we in UK.
Hastings is where many of our cricket team members including yours truly bought sleeveless pullovers for our upcoming one-day games....and we needed them too (in their summer and all!), as some of those sea-breezes were unbelievably lazy (cut right thru us at times).
