Bus. Bus. Bus

DAY 53. SEPTEMBER 23. BACK IN ISTANBUL Bussing
I am too old for this. Too much vodka. Two hours sleep and onto the bus for the longest and last day of our tour. Fee told me I came into our room soaking wet having apparently been skinny dipping and passed out next to her. Hmm. Thankfully we will no longer be on tours from tomorrow so the drinking will well and truly come to a screaming halt. There were many sore heads this morning and some extremely grumpy people.
Today we were spending more time on the bus than Inspector Blakey. We had a five hour drive to Ankara the nations capital and from there a seven hour drive to Istanbul. We arrived in Ankara about midday and went to the National Museum. Well at least some of us did. You need to be in the mood to visit a museum and few of us were not in that mood. So five people went to the museum whilst twenty people spent two hours wandering around a shopping mall. Of those twenty, eighteen of them flocked to Burger King or McDonalds to get some "normal food". Fee and I resisted as we have done all trip. Which is a big effort when you are travelling and often crave comfort food from back home.
Fed and watered we continued on for another seven (yes seven) hours to Istanbul. It was a long drive and I felt sorry for the bus driver who all up had twelve hours to drive after being up most of the night with us. By the time we got to the hotel it was almost 10pm and everyone was knackered. In the process of checking in, everyone dispersed and the tour came to an abrupt end. It felt odd, yet again we got to know a cool bunch of people and yet again we leave them, possibly never to see them again. It would have been good to say a proper goodbye but it didn't happen.
We went our to find a quick bite to eat for our last Turkey meal, and wanting to end the way we started went looking for a kebab. Well we couldn't find one. Unbelievable. Because it was so late at night all the ones near us had closed, we were in Turkey and unable to find a kebab. That's like not being able to get a beer in a pub. So out of sheer (and I mean sheer) desperation we went into McDonalds. (Hangs head in shame). At least I ordered a McTurko, which in the pretty pictures on the menu looked like a kebab. Heres a handy tip for those of you who may go to Turkey in the future. Don't ever, ever, not even if your life depends on it, order a McTurko. It was McTerrible. And so our trip to Turkey was coming to an end. So here are the traditional best and worst.
The best Istanbul- an action packed city with so much to see and do (and buy) Gallipoli- a must for every Aussie Cruising on the Mediterranean Chocolate Baklava and Pistachio Turkish delight Ballooning over Cappadocia
The worst Raki The obsession with bread. For breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, brunch etc Istanbul traffic
