101 Dalmations in clear white pants
Entry 4 of 5 | show all | print this entry |
Well since I last wrote it has been sun sun sun on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. And when I read tales of the cold weather back home I cant help but laugh. Then chuckle. And end with a guffaw.Sorry.
Perfect weather which has been improved by the number of European women who like to be free of bothersome bikini tops. Lucky I had the dark sunglasses on, as did most men I noticed. All we needed were dark trenchcoats and our descent would have been complete.
As mentioned Dubrovnik is beautiful. We came across an Australian ABC reporter doing a report on the city. He began "Known as the pearl of the Adriatic, Europes finest walled town, Dubrovnik, has survived earthquakes, empires and heavy weapons but can it survive mass tourism" Well if mass tourism is topless Europeans than yes.
On a serious note Duborvnik has been the scene of heavy shelling and bombs by the former Yugoslavs and this was noticebale when we did a city wall walk. The old town walls are still intact and form a 25 metre high barrier and are over 2km long. You can walk along these for some great views over the ocean and the old town.
Whislt walking you notice the different colours of the roofs. Some are old, grey and centuries old. Next to them are shiny new orange ones. This is the case as their roofs were destroyed by shells and bombs. It must be amaying to see your neiggbours house destroyed whilst yours is in intact which is often the case.
Hard to think that 10 years ago this was the life they were leading.
One bad thing about Europe is their beaches. They have no sand, just rocks. Makes it hard to walk about but the Europeans love it, crowding every square inch onto the rocks and sunning themselves. They are all so tanned and have no fear of the sun. No slip slop slap for them.

One bad fashion thing I have noticed is they all wear white shirts or tops with white pants. They look liek they are about to play test cricket. (for you canadians that cricketers wear all white uniforms but you wouldnt know that as cricket doesnt involve snow or clubbing baby seals)
These white outfits are also see through. Good on some. Terrible on many. But no doubt this summer there will be many prancing around in such outfits in Aus. And Sol will eb the first one to wear them.
Tearfully saying goodbye to dubrovnik we caught the ferry to Hvar a 7 hour trip. Like the castaways on Gilligans Island we were well prepared for any mishaps as we had all our luggage and material to make a cocunut phone if need be.
The trip was long especially as we were on the deck. No chairs, so everyone just lay on the floor. Luckily it was sunny so it was good opportunity to make myself golden delicious. As I sat sunning (or sun cancering) myself grooving to my Ipod, fee delved into my backpack and grabbed my book- The Da Vinci Code. Since then I have not seen much of her as she is constantly buried in the book, only coming up for air or chocoalte (but mainly chocolate)
Hvar is a lot smaller than Dubrovnik. Of course it has an old town but its main feature is its beautiful harbour and rocky beaches. OUr apartment was on top a steep hill, ensuring we endured the natural staimaster several times a day. Much to Fees chagrin. (At least she stopped reading)
The two days in Hvar were spent sunning, swimming in the clear blue water and lying on rocks. The Europeans must have been seals in their former lives as theylike sunning on rocks. I guess when there is no sand there is no other choice. And like seals they dont like wearing bathers.
Apart from the great hrabour there is lots to do in Hvar, mainly take day trips, ferries, go sailing etc (we did a small trip to a local island. There are 3 nearby islands. 2 of them have nude beaches. Guess which one Fee took us to)
I will say it once again, Croatia is a great place. I feel a bit guilty as I normally try and learn soem fo the local language but in the week I did not learn or speak one word of Croatian. Everyne here speaks English (and usually Italian and German ) as well. Get yourself there. Hvar is full of Aussie backpackers (but dont hold that against it) and go there. Cheaper than Western Europe and better.
So from Hvar we took the super fast ferry to (Banana) Split. We had 3 hours to kill there before going to the airport, so for a change we wandered around the old town. This time it wasnt as good as we had to lug our luggage ( I wonder if that is where they got the name from). Still it was a fairly nice town and of course it was on the UNESCO list.
We arrived into Budapest in the late afternoon and I loved the town staright away. Lots of great buildings all set around the impressive Danube River. Fee was not as impressed but only coz she missed Croatia already..maybe it was the topless women...probably not.
Walking around the place was good, the weather was nice and iut had a great feel to it. Lots of people about and many wearing those white pants.
Our hotel is in a great spot and as I said we were on our honeymoon we have a great room on the top floor overlooking the river and the buildings.
This morning we are about to do a 4 hour cycling tour of Budapest which should be good. They also give you free internet before you start hence my ramblings.
We only have 4 days here but already I think I want more. We are meeting some locals that Garrath knows on Saturday night to take us away from the tourist plcaes which should be good. I emailed one of them to confirm and he replied ending the email.. Love from Doobi, your new Hungarian friend. Very nice...or maybe he wants me...i am sure he is just nice.
So until next time
Bye
