So........ welcome back!! This will be a bit of a mishmash as there are a few locations to cover, which I'll attempt to do while it's a bit overcast, mind you, I may have to leave you mid-sentence as soon as the sun starts to shine..

After the Gili Island, off to Lombok for the night B4 flying back to Bali.  Kuta Lombok was ok, didn't rate it, though I was only there one night, but being hassled to buy rubbish nobody needs can test one's patience..  Try to stay cool when the sarong seller tries to dress you up in a ropey bit of cloth with nasty matted tassles... ARE you mad, do you honestly think ANYONE is going to buy that, mrs??  As I say, keep cool, stay polite.  Backpack is now 10kg, dead easy to carry... the lighter I travel, interestingly, the happier I am.  I think Liz regretted bringing her salsa dancing shoes and skirt.... oh, yes, and she also brought a very thick and warm, "long" Berghaus rain mackintosh.  As for me, I brought 2 teatowels which were of zero use, as you can imagine, but you know what it's like, you take random items with the single-braincelled idea that you may just discover a ground-breaking innovative new function for it...Those final days in Malmesbury Park Road were a bit of a blur and what didn't go into boxes for storage ended up in my backpack.  TV remote control, anyone?  The 14 pairs of knickers (yes, a fortnight's worth) could also be deemed excessive when I live in bikinis which get rinsed everyday.  However, unlike the teatowels which got ditched early on, knickers all tell a story, so they're coming with me.

Anyway, where was I?  From Kuta Lombok, me and Liz flew to Denpasar Bali, which took all of 20minutes. They dished the meal out on the runway, before we got on the plane.  Then off to Kuta Bali with Sonja.  In all honesty, it was the place I'd been least looking forward to - the Lonely Planet descibes it as the blacksheep of Bali with its bright lights, posh designer shops, flash Western gentlemen, night clubs, the Ozzies' Disneyland, and indeed, Kuta was a bit of a bad boy, but... I loved it.... Running parallel to all this, you've got a lovely beach, and sunset was a perfect time for a swim.  The sea wasn't the most fabulous, but the surf was awesome,  with easy and consistent waves, board rental only a couple of squid a day.  The rebellious side of Kuta was experienced on the Sat night when we all met in Alleycats (yes, a British bar...) for a night out for Tex's brother's girlfriend's birthday.  We ended up in discotheque land til the early hours.  The Bali bombing memorial, dedicated to the 202 killed in the Sari Club blast in 2002 was just opposite the nightclub we'd all been in.  Bit of a sobering moment, such a waste of so many lives.

5 of us picked up a motor in Kuta and drove to Balian, which is a couple of hours along the south coast of the top part of Bali.  We called in on our Italian mate Carlo (see photo) who was staying on his own in a super excellent villa.... Kinda invited myself back in a couple of weeks...  In Balian, not many people around, small multi national bunch of surfers, black sand doesn't attract the average beach bum so much..  Balian was quite good, it's on the map for good waves.  After that, headed up to Medewi, just for lunch, as this has the reputation in Bali for the greatest waves, but on our day there, it was pretty lame.  Boscombe artificial reef was gnarlier...

Ok, so that's Balian, left there yesterday... driving over here is a bit of a pantfiller, everyone overtakes each other at the same time, blowing horns and smiling, waving at the 5 Westerners...  The hire car was a Kijang... spacious for bodies and luggage. The Californians convinced me it was ok to put my foot down on the bumpy roads.... Go mental it's a rental !!  Drop the car back in Kuta and here I am in Ubud, with Sonja and the Californians.. they leave the end of the weekend.  Said farewell to Liz yesterday as her 2month trip came to an end.  We've done the last few weeks on and off together.  Felt like I've lost my boardleash now she's gone... A really bright and generous person, whose observations and knowledge of the people and places entertained me endlessly.  The most fantastic travel mate I've had.  I don't know if my lowly knowledge of rips, breaks, swells, kept her as equally fascinated in me... but that's ok, we laughed too much all the same and kept an eye out for each other.

Sonja's been here a week now, She's enjoying it all and getting into the swing.  The last week or so we've been either a 3some or a 5some, which has been great and easy.  However, I'm getting restless for the challenge of travelling alone for a bit....

Obviously, there's a lot I'm missing out in this blog; people I've met along the way, food, state of accommodation etc, but it's just a quick resume of what I've been doing to add dialogue to the photos....  Thank you everyone for your messages, I'm so glad you keep in touch... Sorry if I don't reply, it's not that I don't like you, it's simply cos I can't be arsed.  Using the braincells is very demanding.

Ohhhhhhh, btw, give me your present/souvenir orders before Sunday, as I'm shipping stuff home via surface mail on Monday.  If you need anything, just drop me a line on my email, Greg's got his order in, promise darling, you'll have it...Lesley, still looking for quality jewellery bits, nothing fantabulous as yet though... Mum, do you want a sarong?  Luke, I'll get you some ingredients now I've heard you're a whizz with the microwave.  Liz, a pair of ballet shoes perhaps? OK,  Bye bye for now............ Keep writing, dooooooooooooooo !!! Love you all x x x
