We spent the night in Haast - a tiny town on the coast.  It was pouring rain, but we ventured out anyway to try to find penguins.  We were told of sightings just earlier in the week.  We drove up and down the coast, managed to find some footprints, but no penguins.  There's a sad photo of B2 in the pouring rain looking down a beach in hopes of spotting the little buggers.

We pressed inland - a long drive - with many views/lookouts/waterfalls on the way.  As soon as we cleared the pass, it was sunny and HOT!  Totally unbelievable how quickly the weather changed happed.  We had been in cold, rainy, jungle, and crossed over into dry, sunny, hot, farmland.  We snapped some more photos of sheep (we probably have thousands by now) and continued into the Lake area with Wanaka and Hewea.  We spent the night in the resort town of Lake Wanaka - a happening place with a lovely town on the lakeshore with gorgeous mountains all around.
