OK, what next? This is seriously turning into Rick and Jamie's Disaster Tour 2011! :-(
Last night we went to bed knowing the entire Pacific Ocean basin had been put on a Tsunami alert due to the massive and horrific earthquake in Japan (after a couple of hours watching CNN hype it up better than ever). Jamie packed a bag ready for possible evacuation. I laughed it off. At 5:12am, in total darkness, our hotel room phone went off. It was the hotel reception informing us that we were to be in the lobby in 15 minutes, ready for evacuation to higher ground (our lovely resort hotel is right on the beach). All valuables were to be packed in a small bag and taken with us.
To make a long story short, we were told the Tsunami wave was estimated to hit Moorea at 7:15am and so we were going to all walk up the road to the soccer field. At 6am all the hotel guests were led, by the gendarmes and fire service, away from the resort in a procession. Like Moses leading the Jews out of Egypt! By 6:15am we had reached the soccer field and the sun was coming out. At about 8:30am we were told we could return to our hotel. As we were all beginning the walk back, a message came in to us that the water in the lagoon was receding (not a good sign) and we should return at once to high ground. Not sure what that was because at about 9:00am we were told all was well, the wave had passed and we could return to the hotel lobby (the highest part of the resort property). Once back in the hotel lobby, we were told we could go to the restaurant for breakfast, but if we saw the lagoon water level go down at all, we were to rush back up to the lobby area. At 9:30am, they announced during breakfast that the alert had been lifted. Another close call, another story to tell! On the positive side, we made friends with a really nice French/American couple from Boston.
All is well here today. Weather is hot and sunny, lagoon is calm, sea is blue and turquoise and we're planning on lazing around.....by the infinity pool and beach! Just another day in paradise!
Oy, what will California bring??!!
