Shocking Destruction of Christchurch

I've also attached some pics of the Centrepoint Motel where we stayed
. These pics were taken just hours after the quake by the owner. They are pics of the owner's unit. The motel itself apparently didn't have any structural damage, though 95% of the plates and glasses in the rooms were all broken - easy to see why!! It was one of the lucky ones. Unlike the Sept 4, 2010 quake, this one did not discriminate based on age. Some fairly new multi-story buildings were reduced to a pile of rubble.
Let's hope this is the end of the violent shaking that has been rocking this city since last September...
Tomorrow we are supposedly going to be reunited with our carry-on luggages that we left behind in Christchurch. I won't even attempt to discribe the amount of time and effort I had to spend in the past couple of days to get these bags shipped to us before we leave New Zealand. I will leave that to when I am back home and have had a few glasses of wine.... Keep your fingers crossed!
It's been a week now since the massive quake that leveled so much of Christchurch. Though we were fortunate to have escaped this tragedy (narrowly as it were), it has nonetheless still touched us tremendously. Having spent 3 days there, we got to meet and chat with a number of really nice locals. Whether it's Jeff and Naomi (the owners of the motel we stayed at), or Emmett and Clare (2 friendly Irish working in Christchurch that we met at the pub), we had a very warm and friendly reception in Christchurch. Beyond that, we became very familiar with the different streets and buildings in the Central Business District that was so severely damaged. Having said that, I thought I'd post some of the pictures we took around Christchurch when we were there, before the huge quake of Feb. 22nd and then show you what they look like now. Very sad. These are just bricks and mortar, but behind many of these collapses were lives lost - the true tragedy.
