Had to pick up the car today and we were fairly nervous about getting out of New York City after witnessing the way people drive (and walk and cycle and push hot dog stands) around the streets here. We definitely took the GPS upgrade and got a nice Chrysler Town & Country Van to carry all our gear around. We needed to get 2 taxis to get our gear from the hotel to the Hertz place!
After a few wrong turns and some re-directing by the lady in the GPS we were out of the city and on our way to the country. The weather turned pretty awful outside of New York City with a lot of rain and wind not assisting our cause. The trip to Phelps is a bit weird geographically. We leave NYC which is in New York State, cross the border into New Jersey, then into Pennsylvania and end up back in New York State or "Upstate New York" as they call it. There are a lot of little towns along the way and the road never gets less than a two way highway each way with the traffic being a lot more than you'd experience on the roads between towns in Australia. Most of it is actually 3 lanes.
We stopped at a little place called Stroudsburg, Pennsylvannia for some Maccas and then Leanne drove, copping the worst of the weather and experiencing darkness from 4:30pm onwards.
We arrived at Shelley's parents place about 7pm. We had the GPS to guide us but Shelley had texted us and told us to look for the fairy lights. Shelley's Dad, Lee had certainly laid on the Christmas lights for us and we couldn't miss the place.
It was great to see some familiar faces. Neil, Shelley, Fin, Mara and Eben were there of course. Shelley's parents Lee and Sharon were there who we'd met on a previous visit to Australia. We'd also met Shelley's sister Becky and brother-in-law Eric when they were on their honeymoon in Australia. They introduced us to their daughter, Sydney (there's a story there). We also met Shelley's brother Greg, his wife Heather and their daughters Hannah and Ally.
Neil made us Pizza and we had a few drinks and it was great to catch up with everybody.
