The Orchid Garden is rated as one the top "things to do" in Singapore, so decided to check it out with a girl from my dorm, Kate. The garden took my breath away!!! The Botanical Garden alone was ginormous and we could have easily spent an entire day there. And a section of the garden was dedicated to orchids...and it was just mind blowing. If you asked me, the orchid garden alone is worth a trip to Singapore. It was that good!!
Mom, I know you will enjoy the pictures :-)

Singapore is immaculate and impeccable. If what it takes to keep a country this clean is to punish littering with jail time, I say arrest litterers everywhere!! Singapore reminds me a lot of Tokyo - modern, efficient, clean and people are incredibly polite. On the trains, I saw more people give their seat up for others then anywhere else I have ever been. I sat next to a young boy about 12-13 yrs old, who willingly have his seat for a little girl around 3 years old. How cute :-))).

Population here is also interesting. There seems to be a mix of just about every Asian background - Indian, Chinese, Malay, Euro-Asian and everything in between. It's hard to tell, who is actually "Singaporian".

The downtown Singapore reminds me a lot of downtown Manhattan - tall business buildings, marina/pier, business district and city hall, and overpriced fancy restaurants and bars. It was actually nice just walking through it, as it reminded me of home ;-)))

I must say though, there is nothing culturally charming about Singapore. It's a modern metropolitan that doesn't offer flavor of its own. And did I mention, prices are western standards! Chinese dinner last night (6 dumplings and a dish of Chinese broccoli with garlic) cost me $20. A load of coin laundry costs $5 at my hostel. A bottle of beer at a restaurant costs $8 (I was paying $1.5 in Thailand). Today, I was at a supermarket buying a bottle of green tea and was charged 15 cents for a "chill fee" because it was cold!! Unheard of....!
It was good idea to stay here just 2 days. This country makes you believe you are outside of SE Asia!
