I did my first boat briefing and led my first group guide!!
Once the guests fill the boat in the morning to head out on the diving trip, they all must get a briefing on the boat logistics (food, toilet, how to enter water, how to return from a dive, danger zones, etc). Sarah sat with me the day before and gave me all the key points to inform the guests. I practiced several times before going to bed. In the morning, I woke up early, went to the boat and practiced the briefing to an empty audience before the guests arrived. I was a bit nervous, but I rocked it for the live show :)
After it was over, Sarah said "that was absolutely brilliant!" And everybody clapped.
It felt good!
Then, I led a group of 3 open water divers with Sarah following us from the back. It's a completely different experience leading a group in the front!! I am constantly looking back to make sure my group is together. I have to make sure they do not dive too deep, they don't go up and down too much/fast, and they have enough air at all times. All the while, I am looking for marine life for them to enjoy, and watching for currents and potentially unsafe diving conditions. Of course, all this becomes second nature once you master it. But for someone who is learning to be a DM, it's a bit overwhelming.
I led my second group dive today, and it was much better! The divers were advanced divers so they were naturally easier to manage. They knew how to maintain control under water and they were very good customers and stayed very close to me. Dive masters appreciate this! I saw 2 guests from another group wandering on their own and not listening to their DM. That is NOT a good experience. That is a major headache for the DMs. Of course we want the guests to enjoy their dive, but we also have safety as our priority concern. When guests go off in the sea on their own, it's a major red flag!
Not fun for us.
Tomorrow I do my Deep Dive Specialty with Sarah. This course allows me to dive 40 meters. Very excited for a new challenge :-)
