This morning we went straight to work with the DMT team. Alex from UK, who is already a dive master, joined our team for 2 weeks to help out around the dive shop. The DMT team (Me, Duncan, Joanna), Alex and our instructor Sarah, pulled out into the ocean to refresh our rescue skills.
We each had to demonstrate rescuing a non-breathing diver from the bottom of the ocean, pull him to the surface, give them rescue breaths while taking off both our equipment and swimming toward the boat. Even though I just passed the Rescue course, doing it again with Alex whose body was considerably larger and whose dive equipment was significantly different made it VERY challenging.
Lets just say I failed the rescue quite miserably.
I definitely killed Alex today if he were a real unconscious diver :-(
He kept sinking under water and I had a hard time keeping him afloat face up.

Then, we were tested on towing a diver for 100m. This was SO much harder than it looked. We had pretty strong current today so swimming with Alex's body was extremely strenuous and I was completely out of breath and strength. I finished in over 8 minutes, which gave me a lowest score of 1 out of 5!
Talk about a crushed confidence today.

After a brief break, we all participated in a clean up of a nearby reef. We all took a bag, dived to the bottom of the ocean and looked for any debris and trash. This was somewhat uplifting, knowing we were making a difference in cleaning up the ocean.

What an exhausting day. I was physically beat by the time we returned to shore at 1pm. I was a walking zombie.
Tomorrow I am rewarded with 2 dives to go see mantas :). Of course, I now must dive with a different focus and mindset. My responsibility now is to make sure the guests are taken care of, dive safely, and are happy with their experience with us.

I am off to bed now. Good night!

Hang in there kid, you will get better... who knows one day I could be coming to you to go dive !!

You know that no one is good at the beginning, right? You'll get better with time. I'm looking at those photos and I wish I could be there with you for a few days at least. I looks so exotic comparing to dirty, smelly New York these days.
