There were always fresh seafood available in all the countries I traveled. But nowhere has there been as many variety of fresh LIVE seafood available as Kota Kinabalu. There is one section of town where tanks of live fish are kept, and you can pick the dinner of your choice and they will cook it for you however you like. I walked by these tanks and these are the kinds of fish I dived with earlier in the day! I couldn't get myself to kill it for my meal.
There is a particular fish called Stone Fish. It literally disguises itself like a big piece of rock. It is poisonous on the surface but the meat is supposed to be moist and juicy. It is very rare to find it at a seafood market/restaurant. Some boys who were staying at my hostel went to try it last night and raved about how delicious it was. It was also quite expensive, at $20 per rock fish. But apparently it was fried in a butter garlic sauce and the meat was delicious. I told the boys I just saw it earlier in the day sitting in the bottom of the ocean! I couldn't possibly eat it. But they said, "look, it's already caught and somebody is gonna eat it anyway. It may as well be me." That is true. I know it is hypocritical, as I eat other kinds of fish like mackerel and grouper and I've swam with them as well. I don't know. I have no rationale for why some fish is ok for consumption and others are not. And while I cannot pick out a live fish for dinner, I'm happy to eat a dead one already grilled and prepared. I just don't want to be the one to determine fish's death.

I have met quite a few girls staying in the hostel. Last night, me, Angela from London, and Tang from Taiwan headed to the night market to look around the local scene. There are many stands that grill fresh squid, lobster, prawns, and all kinds if fish and you can take a seat at a table while they cook the seafood. We shared a whole fish and some squid in a skewer and I honestly think it was the best seafood I've ever had!! It was SO freakin good. We all stopped talking and dug in ;)
Today we were joined by 2 more girls from Canada and another girl from Hong Kong. The 6 of us went to the night market and we shared some more fish, squid, and a giant prawn - man, we were in heaven! And for all that seafood we each paid about $6! Unbelievable.

I am taking a Rescue Diver course while in here in Kota Kinabalu. It is one of the requirements before starting a Dive Master Training so I wanted to get it out of the way before heading back to Indo. It's a 3-day course and yesterday and today, I learned how to respond to emergency situations or accidents while diving. It's been very interesting and informative. Now I know how to give rescue breaths to an unconscious diver in the ocean :-)
