I came to a small village called Amed on Bali to do a bit more diving before leaving Indonesia.
Having just returned from Komodo, the last 6 dives I did here were just SO disappointing!!! Ugh. I know I shouldn't compare dive sites but I was WOW'ed every dive in Komodo and now the dives leave me saying "that was it??"
I mean, for almost every dive in Amed, the guide and even the instructors were like, "oh there are some really nice corals there. You will enjoy it." And once I went underwater, I was like "this is what they call nice corals?"

Boy, I'm in trouble. My standards went up the roof after Komodo. Maybe I need to take a break from diving a bit...

Amed is a tiny town on the east coast of Bali, about 3 hours north of Denpasar. Its primary business seem to come from scuba diving tourists, with countless dive shops and restaurants lined up on a narrow paved road running through the mountain. There doesn't seem to be much else here. It's very quiet, with locals sitting around the shops and restaurants chatting with each other while waiting for tourists to show up. The peak season starts in late June to July, so it's still peaceful around here and the locals certainly look bored.
Last night I went to a local mom & pop restaurant and I was the only customer there, and it didn't appear like anyone else was showing up anytime soon. I had a shot of
Arak (Balinese vodka) and stir-fry vegetables with squid for $4. :-)

The Balinese people are super friendly! Almost EVERY person I meet - or even walk past - ask me "where you from?!" And some just want a friendly chat. After a while I stopped saying I'm from New York, because they all respond with "you don't look American!" So I now just say I came from Japan. But what's really interesting to me is that when in America, so many people tell me I don't look Japanese. But EVERY Balinese have told me I look Japanese!! And they are so funny - they are always throwing Japanese words at me - mainly "konichiwa" and "arigato". Some know many more words - it goes to show how many Japanese tourists visit Bali.

Tomorrow I'm heading to an island called Lombok, which is 1-hr boat ride away, to catch a flight to Malaysia the next day. I can't believe I exhausted all 30-days of my visa in Indo! Time sure flew by.
I decided to shorten my trip in Malaysia to just 2 weeks, so I can hurry back to Lembongan and make it a home for 2 months :)
I'm really looking forward to settling down and stop moving for a while.
