We are staying on a tiny village of Tuk Tuk on Samosir island which sits in the middle of the lake. Last night, we stayed in a traditional Batak House for $10/night. It was comfortable enough, but K decided she was on vacation (not backpacking on a budget like me) and wanted to splurge on a bit more comfort. When we walked around town yesterday, we saw a stunning resort with a pool in the courtyard and breathtaking views of the lake and the hills in the horizon. K wanted to check it out, but I said, "no way, this is like the Ritz of Lake Toba!" We walked onto the property and it was just beautiful. The rates were surprisingly cheap for the quality, ranging from $40-65/night. K decided we were moving. It was fine by me, I wanted her to enjoy the last days of her vacation. But it will be hard to adjust back to my dormitory living after traveling in luxury with K
Today we rented a scooter and drove around the island.
We LOVED this charming island!! There is only one main road that runs around the perimeter of the island and the view was amazing! Lush green mountains and farms fields, children in color uniforms, Batak villages, and beautiful blue lake filled our visual peripherals. The island is quaint and peaceful. The Batak architecture is fascinating. K got on a motorcycle for the first time in her life - she was scared at first but overcame her fear and we had a blast!
At our last stop, very dark clouds started approaching our direction and we sped home. We raced with the clouds and we made it back just in time. We literally parked the bike, and the rain began to pour! Talk about lucky (and my fantastic driving skills :-))
We returned 5 hours later, and I was beat.
We took a brief nap and we are now headed to a traditional Batak dancing show at our resort. Beer and dinner time :-)
