My mom used to tell me that the 20-hours of pain she endured while giving natural birth to me all but disappeared the moment she laid her eyes on me.

That was pretty much what I experienced today, when I arrived at the beach of Khao Lak after a grueling 12-hr train ride, a 1.5 hr transfer wait time, then another 3.5 hrs on a public bus. Some say its not the destination, it's the journey. I say F that. Sometimes the journey just sucks.
The sleeper train was something I had been on before so I knew what to expect. But this time, I sat next to 2 toilets and I can't tell you how much that stank. If that wasn't bad enough, I witnessed a cockroach crawling on a side of my bed! UGH. The only good thing was this train arrived only 40 minutes late, compared to the 4-hr delay of my previous sleeper train.

The public bus to Khao Lak was surprisingly scenic. We drove through lush green palm trees and huge limestone mountains and caves. But after 2 days of no shower, I was just anxious to arrive already. When I got off at Khao Lak, the hostel was easy to find. I paid $7 for a dormitory bed, dropped off my bags and immediately asked for directions to the beach. As I walked along a dirt path toward the beach, I started to hear the waves and smell the sea. I started to walk a little faster. Then I saw the ocean.
I ran to the water and literally uttered, "oh I missed you so much!!" ;-)
I was SO SO happy.
I sat on a beach chair (it belonged to a resort and I'm sure I wasn't supposed to), and stared out into the sea for 3 hours. No book, no music. Just me and the sea.
I won't lie, it is not the most beautiful beach I've ever seen but today I was happy to be on any beach. I feel whole again. This is where I belong.
