I stepped into a mall nearby and the malls here are ginormous. They usually have 4-5 floors of shops, with the top floor occupying restaurants and food court. I found a Japanese restaurant in the mall and they had an authentic Japanese menu, like yakizakana (grilled fish), oyakodon (fried chicken with egg over rice), chawanmushi (steamed egg custard), and Japanese hamburger with demiglas sauce!!
It is brutally HOT in Bangkok.
And humid. When I step outside, it feels like I walked into a steam bath. If I just stand outside without moving, sweat will start to drip down the sides of my face, my back and my chest. It's so gross. I love Thailand but this heat is so draining.
I am staying at a hostel and I've met so many people here in just 1 day! Yesterday I met Robert, a guy from San Fran and we went looking for some street curry. Paid $1 for a yummy coconut bamboo and chicken curry. Tonight I met Veneria from Germany and Humi from Holland and we hit the streets for dinner. Found a noodle shop and had a bowl of noodle soup with spinach and chicken for $1.25. When I came back to the hostel, I met a whole bunch of Japanese people and we all just sat in a circle and chatted for a couple of hours. They were so much fun!
You just never stop meeting new people out here. And they all have different backgrounds and travel stories so they are almost always fascinating to talk to. Today was a good day :-)
I am a bit worried about tomorrow. I was planning on going to a train station to buy a ticket to the islands. But a guy at the hostel told me today that the tickets are sold out for the next 2 days due to upcoming Songkran (Thai New Year). I guess I need to get over there myself and find out what the situation is. I hope I can successfully leave Bangkok as scheduled!!
