Flag of Thailand  , Mae Hong Son,
Friday, March 8, 2013

When I arrived in the town of Mae Hong Son yesterday, the van dropped me off on a side of the street and I had no idea which direction was the guesthouse I had booked. I walked into a hotel for directions, and a nice girl gave me general directions. As I started walking, I was approached by a dog which is rare in Thailand, since the dogs here are not exactly people-friendly. I gave him a good pat on the head and told him I was heading to Boondee House.
Now I know you wouldn't believe this - but the dog started guiding me!
He started walking up the street, and kept looking back to make sure I was following. When we came to a traffic light, he turned left which was what the girl had told me. No way!!
Soon I found the guesthouse. I thanked him and gave him another good pat.
I checked in at the guesthouse, dropped off my backpack, and walked next door for lunch. As I was eating my curry, I heard a man shooing a dog. It was my buddy! He was trying to get to me. I finished quickly, paid and walked out but I couldn't find him at that point.

Later, I started planning my day to rent a motorcycle to ride around town. As I was standing at a front desk of the guesthouse, I felt something against my leg and there was my buddy again!! I was so happy to see him and gave him some more affection. Looking relieved to have found me, he lied down at my feet as I waited for my bike.
Talk about a special dog. I was instantly in love. I've been looking for him since but there has been no sight of him :-(

Now back to Switzerland.
Mae Hong Son is the most beautiful town I've visited in Northern Thailand so far.
Unlike Pai, Mae Hong Song is a much less touristy town surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. Since we are in the dry season, the mountains are a bit brownish from dry trees/leaves but the view is stunning nonetheless. I took the bike out early in the morning to start exploring this beautiful town and wow wow wow. Breathtaking views everywhere. I rode the motorcycle (that's right, I rented my very own and rode it all by myself :D ) up, down, and around the mountains for about 5 hours and I was LOVING every minute of it. There is special fragrance in the air in the mountains here - it's like sweet floral scent. I kept inhaling the air, it smelled so good! I took a ride all the way north to the border where a town is inhabited by many tribes from China, Tibet and Burma. It was just beautiful to ride around the villages, see the rice fields, and see local villagers at work. Today was one of those "surreal" moments - as I was riding the bike through the winding roads surrounded by bamboos and mountains, I thought to myself "I am in freakin Thailand!"

I just love Thailand. People are so sweet. Everything is cheap. Food is delicious.
I love how people bow their head and sometimes put their hands together at their chest when greeting or showing appreciation. I love that people take off their shoes/sandals immediately at the entrance. They do this everywhere, not just in their homes - at place of business, temples, shops, etc. I love that they sit on the floor while they sit in a circle and eat with their hands. There's something natural and intimate about that..
If it weren't for the brutally humid weather and the massive mosquito population, I would seriously consider staying here ;)

What a gorgeous landscape - you can tell that when it's not dry it must just be so lush and even more fabulous.
