The bungalow I stayed in last night turned out to be quite a shit hole (after all, I did pay less than $7). I didn't mind the shit hole actually, I've learned to adjust quite well to the backpacking standards. But the mattress was placed on the floor, which made it susceptible to ant invasion at night. The room also smelled like urine. After having a horrible night of sleep and having eaten crackers for dinner last night, I treated myself to a nice breakfast of Thai omelette platter with a banana-coconut shake ($4 total). Oh wow they were delicious!!
I was debating whether I should stay in the same room and suck it up for paying less than $7... But since I made a trip out here to relax, I allowed myself to splurge on a better quality accommodation for a couple of nights and moved to a bungalow for $19/ night
At the new guesthouse, I ran into Brandon, a guy I shared a van with from Chiang Mai. We ended up having lunch together (had an amazing pumpkin salad for $4) and he invited me to hop on his rented motorcycle for a ride around Pai. I knew I eventually had to overcome my fear of riding motorcycles after the traumatic fall in the Philippines. So I decided to go.
My planned day of relaxing with a book went out the window but it was soooooo worth it! The mountain scenery was just so stunning. And Brandon turned out to be such a funny and interesting guy.
This is what I love about traveling - you end up meeting so many people - most of them are like-minded people, who want to explore, expand and learn. If I were in the States, I would never hop on a motorcycle with a stranger. But out here, we are all one of the same.
What a great day I had, filled with amazing food, views, company and laughs.
