I have no idea why.
Maybe a mix of feeling homesick...missing my friends and my dog...feeling a bit tired from constant traveling, having to always be looking for food instead of simply opening a fridge or picking up the phone...having no routine...not knowing where I am going or where I may sleep tomorrow...the heat and humidity in Thailand is physically draining...and I am missing the ocean.
So today I just headed straight to a Thai massage and splurged in a body massage for $7/hr. Then I walked to Starbucks and ordered a $4 latte to put myself in somewhat of a familiar environment. I was enjoying the latte until I made the mistake of picking up a newspaper - which I hadn't done in nearly 3 months - and I remembered why I stopping reading the news
I felt a little better by the afternoon, especially after some chocolate :-)
Let me go back to the Thai massage - I knew I had try this, as I LOVED Balinese massage when I was in Bali 4 yrs ago. I was curious about the Thai massage.
It involved a lot of kneading, pushing/pulling, twisting, an stretching. The old woman pretty much used her whole body, from her elbows to her feet. It was interesting although I won't say it felt great. I didn't walk out of there feeling relieved or released from tension. I'm glad I tried it nonetheless.
Chiang Mai is a city that is hard to describe - it is busy. Many cars, taxis, tuk tuks, scooters and pedestrian traffic. You walk by guesthouses and restaurant/bars just about every third step and there are definitely a good crowd of tourists. But Chiang Mai is most known for some 300 Wats (temples) that are preserved all over the city.
In NYC, we had either Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts on every street. In Chiang Mai, there are Wats. It's quite stunning, actually.
You can walk anywhere and run into one - or monks walking around in their colorful attire.
The city is charming despite the chaos, and there are infinite number of activities you can do here - from cooking classes, zip lining, night safari, rock climbing, trekking in the mountains, elephant rides, etc etc.
I signed up for a 2 day/1 night trekking starting tomorrow. Will report back when I return :)
