You may have noticed that I haven't mentioned much about food in the last 4 weeks of my trip. This is highly unusual, since food occupies most of my conversations when I'm home.
I must admit that food in the Phils didn't blow me away. I had a few meals that were good, but everything else was ok to decent.
I don't know if it's because the seasoning here is very salty. Or that meat and rice are the main course and I didn't feel balanced with an equal portion of vegetables. I SO miss eating salads (shana, I'm missing you and your hearty salads so bad right about now!). Aside from mangoes, I also did not think fruits here were good. Apples, tangerines and bananas weren't sweet like they are back home. I did have a sweet and juicy naval orange once, but it cost me a fortune.

I'm a firm believer in eating local foods while traveling. I hate seeing tourists eating McDonalds or pizza when they are in a foreign country - I don't understand why you would travel to another country to eat what you can eat back home. But admittedly, after being here for 4 weeks and spending 5 days on Tao, I was craving some comfort food! I had a burger as soon as I got off the bangka (although it was not even remotely good), and Gesa, Gerrit and I found a brick-oven pizza joint that was unbelievably delish. Feeling guilty for breaking my own rule, I ordered a Filipino dish called pork menudo on the last day in El Nido. It looked like a canned dog food and tasted like it! I was so disappointed.

Since we are approaching our last days in the Philippines (Gesa, Gerrit and I coincidently fly out of Philippines on the same day), we are on a mission to find some good Filipino food. Last night, we went to a restaurant recommended by the guesthouse staff. The food was ok but we thought the menu was too westernized. We just didn't have the experience that the food was what the locals eat. Mission failed.
We asked the tricycle driver on the way back where we can get some good local food. He recommended a place that honestly looked more like a community cafeteria than a restaurant. But when it comes to food, DO believe a local!! The food was so good. It actually tasted like a home-cooked meal over a heap of white rice. YUM. Mission accomplished! Gesa and I also shared a tub of triple chocolate ice cream after being desert-deprived for weeks. Oh we were so happy :-D

There were plenty of mangosteens in the Philippines but they were just a bit of a pain to eat.
