Happy birthday David.
Today we had to sort out a few things before heading to Korea. Like booking travel arrangements and posting some stuff home etc. That night there was a sushi party laid on by the hostel owner, so we headed along. We had tried to eat as much Japanese food as we could while we were in the country, and therefore we had had a lot of sushi already. However this party was the business, basically the choice was fantastic, the food was excellent and we had locals showing us how to make them and what were good combinations etc. We tried salmon, salmon eggs, tuna, crab, squid, sword fish, sea urchins, shrimp, fermented beans, avocado, radish , japanese mushrooms, water cress, cucumber, soya sauce, omelette, chicken, and some spicy sauces. These are only the ones that we can remember!!! It was all laid out in a buffet form and after we were given a demo on how to make sushi we were let loose!!! It was delicious and a lovely touch by the owner to mark OUR last night in Japan!!!
Seriously though, this sushi party typified the Japanese experience for us, the people are probably the nicest we have met anywhere. We will not forget their kindness. We have been to a few other parties like this at hostels and normally they are used to generate cash for the hostel or to bring people to the bar, but to put one on for free and there was no bar involved was a true act of generosity. For anyone reading this and looking for a hostel in Hakata/Fukuoka, look no further than Kajosan International hostel Fukuoka. The place is top notch, just like everything else in Japan.
