9th Feb We decided to head out and see what Bondi was like as a nightlife area. So off we went and checked out the area, it was a mixed bag of rough Aussie joints and upmarket cocktail bars. Eventually we found our own level in a beach hut type of bar that served tapas and we had a very good night here.
10th Feb Woke up a bit tired after our night out in Bondi Beach. And the thought of having to move rooms again, O! so we went down to reception to be told that we would have to check out before 10am and then check in again at 2pm.....great, what the heck would we do we do until 2pm with all our bags. We had breaky anyway and the woman kindly told us that we could check in at 12, we were glad. So we hit the beach......yieppy! we did the coastal walk between Bondi and Coogee beaches, which was great, it was lovely to sit on the beach and watch all the surfers, they really can surf here. Coogee is defo nicer than Bondi beach as well. So we headed back to Bondi beach again and headed to the supermarket. Who did we meet here only 2 girls that Orla knows from Knockraha, Aoife O'Leary and Rosin Buckley, how cool, so it was lots of girlie hugging and giggling in the middle of the Supermarket. O! it was so great to meet them though, so we arranged to meet up later in the week for drinks....sweet as!. It really does live up to its name "County Bondi".
11th Feb We had a nightmare of a morning....we wanted to move to a hostel in Kings cross as we wanted to stay in as many parts of the city as possible to get a real feel for the place. So we booked this hostel online, it sounded great but when we got there is was awfull, this was "Chilli Blue hostel", the mattress' were torn, and I'd say if I looked closer there would have been bed bugs crawling all over them, the room was a mess, beer bottles, clothes everywhere and secuirty was not great at all, tiny lockers. So we decided to forfeit our deposit and go somewhere else. So we tryed another hostel in the same area, this was the same except probably worse, this was "Great Aussi backpackers". However we did speak to a few people staying here and I'd say there is a good party atmopshere there, if you can stick the dirt! We eventualy ended up eating our words about "Base" and heading back there, at least this place is really clean. After we checked into Base, we headed for the Opera House and said we may as well use our harbour cruise voucher. This was great value, we basically got this for free on the Base backpackers deal that we had from the last time we stayed there, so we enjoyed a one hour cruise all around the harbour and a free glass of wine....happy days. From here, we took a walk around Circular Quay along side the Opera House, this is where the after work crowd come for there expensive cocktails, its really nice though. The restaurants look amazing as well. When we got back to the hostel, Orla just thought that when we were in the Aussie Backpacker hostel this morning, the lady at reception gave us a Goody pack, so we opened these packs and descovered that in one of the booklets, there were vouchers for 1 free drink in 15 pubs around Sydney.....and we had a booklet each!!!! Happy days, so in good Irish style we didn't waste anytime and headed out to test these vouchers, it really did seem too good to be true as drinks are not cheap here, no more liters of beer of one Euro, South American style. Our first stop was the Scary Canary, which is actually the hostel bar here, but you get Champagne here....nice one, so that worked. Next we headed to Darling Harbour, which is a really trendy place, with the harbour lined with groovy bars and restaurants, so we had a glass of wine here.....this is brilliant we are thinking, we said we'd be senseable seeing as it was a Monday night and spare the other vouchers for each night during the week, so it looks like it'll be a great week.
12th February Today we had to once again change rooms in the hostel, we are getting a bit sick of this as we have LOADS of luggage at this stage, between camping gear, food, the list is endless but our plans of bringing as little as possible has not been put into action. We are in this dorm now for the next 3 days, nice one. So after all our moving we headed out to the Aquarium, this was really cool. We saw all different kinds of sharks, sting rays, fish, jelly fish you name it, but to be fair the sharks were obviously the highlight. We saw lots of really ugly fish as well.
