Next day we went to see the Franz Joseph Glacier. Really impressive, but not a patch on Perito Moreno in Patagonia. Then we drove to the town of Fox Glacier, and set up our camp. After dinner we went into town to a saloon bar (these places were gold prospecting towns in the 19th century and so are a lot like the wild west in the USA. There wasn't much life in the pub, eventhjough it was a nice place. Anyway we settled in and got the jukebox going, this did not win us many friends, as about half way through our 10 songs we looked up to see the bar had emptied, nice one guys, clear the pub for us!!!!! Anyway we thought it was funny. Next morning we went to Fox Glacier, again impressive and well worth calling into but these glaciers don't even come close to what we saw in South America.
Then we headed south, we were going to try and make it to Queenstown. The garages are fairly well separated here, a 100km distance betweent them is not unusual. Unfortunately we didnt fill up the car when we should have and we had a hairy half an hour with the orange fuel light winking at us and then staying lit. So we did the down hills in neutral to save petrol ( don't know if this makes any difference but it made us feel like we were doing something useful anyway!!!) Luckily we made it to the next garage anyway. The Relief..... Then we carried on to Wanaka, the main attraction here is the Puzzling World. Puzzling world is a brilliant place, full of you guessed it puzzles! Being fans of puzzles and problems we loved it. There is a huge maze on 2 floors, illlusion rooms (including Ames optical illusion used in Lord of the Rings for Gandalph and the Hobbits to seem so different in size), water appearing to be flowing uphill, pool balls seeming to be rolling uphill, slides etc, it was brilliant. The maze took us about half an hour, but getting to the exit was another half hour! Great fun. After our maze adventure, we did some board puzzles but we had to leave as we had a long drive ahead. Puzzle world is excellent, pity we didn't have more time there.
