Buenos Aires is our first stop in South America. All went well with the flights here (Dublin to Manchester, Manchester to London, London to BA ) don´t ask us to explain the logic behind the route we choose to get here!! but overall no problems at all to report on the trip here. Well Orla was last to board at Dublin airport as she was still organising travel insurance, got it sorted anyway. Arrived in BA and Kieran organised the bus from the airport using fluent ENGLISH. Our first attempt at speaking spanish ended in the poor guy behind the desk speaking to us in English. The first trek with our backpacks was an interesting one and ways of loosing alot of luggage were discussed!! not good on day 1. Found the hostel, checked in, dropped the bags and we went off out sightseeing in Buenos Aires. When the pilot on our BA flight annonced "put your gum shields in" we knew we were landing in a crazy place... very fast moving. One of the first things we`ve noticed was how crazy all the drivers are here. They start beeping the minute the lights chance to green, as the car in front has not taken off yet. A few initial observations were broken footpaths everywhere,as in holes you could fall into, really old cars (very polluted city), people wearing wellingtons in the city...why..maybe because of the footpaths, whoknows...
You can see from the photos the sights in BA that we visited but briefly some of the more interesting ones are Evita´s grave, palace, cathedral, Oblisco (20 lanes of traffic in the main street...crazy!). We also went Tango dancing.
We took a stroll down to La Boca, the home of Boca Juniors football team and the most dangerous area of the city. However, there are 2 huge tourist attractions down there and it was well worth the risk. The first is Boca Juniors Stadium, the home of Maradonna (whom we managed to run into! and the second it a street called Caminito, a street lined with corrugated metal colored paintings, see the photos. These were old tenement houses. We actually had the privilage of going to a Boca Juniors game, we have to say that was an experience and Cork fans should learn a thing or two from these fans, my god! they were mad, check out the photo of the guy hanging up the flags...once again another example of how crazy the people are here..the best part is when the fans start chanting about the River Plate fans they go absoluely mental.....
O! we have to talk about the food here, the steak is really good we hate to admit it but it is and is practically for nothing, we went to a posh restaurant the other night, basically it cost the equivalent of 25Euros for 2 meals and a descent bottle of wine, brilliant, our pact of never eating out was quickly broken when we discovered how cheap and good the food is here. The nightlife is great here, basically the place never sleeps, Palermo is the place to be, great craic! not much else to say on BA, we were sad to leave it as it was the end of the beginning.....ahh! boarded our bus to Iguazu Falls , 17 hour bus journey...snoooze...
