"The glories and the beauties of form, color, and sound unite in the Grand Canyon---forms unrivaled even by the mountains, colors that vie with sunsets, and sounds that span the diapason from tempest to tinkling raindrop, from cataract to bubbling fountain."
                                -John Wesley Powell

After a not-so-great breakfast at the Canyon Cafe, we headed to Grand Canyon Village where we met Henry, our guide, at Bright Angel Lodge. He led us on a walking tour of the village, including the El Tovar Hotel, a very beautiful lodge. (Too bad we didn't get to stay there!)  Henry shared a lot of interesting history of the buildings and people like Mary Jane Colter (architect), Glen and Bessie Hyde (explorers), the Kolb brothers (artists) and Fred Harvey (hotelier). During our free time we walked through the El Tovar, the Kolb studio and Hopi House, designed by Colter, which offers a lot of Indian art and other things for sale. They had some beautiful jewelry but I was afraid to even ask the price. I bought post cards!

Lunch was at Maswik Cafeteria, assuredly a cut above the Canyon Cafe at Yavapai.

That afternoon about 20 of us hiked a bit of the Bright Angel Trail with David in the lead. Down was not too bad but coming up we felt the effects of the high altitude.

We saw a presentation about condors by a park ranger---enlightening but disappointing because there was no REAL condor. Earlier that morning we were lucky enough to see a condor in flight---a magnificent sight!

We took in the sunset at Yavapai Point. It was nice but over quickly and not much color left behind.

Then it was back to the lodge and another pretty dull meal.

The ranger presentation in the evening was "Stories of Phantom Ranch." It had some good points but the ranger was a bit strange and his pacing was slow.

Once again, we fell into bed, exhausted! Tomorrow we head to the North Rim.
